Before you scoff, take a listen to this criminally overlooked Tomorrow Never Dies gem:
What in God's green earth possessed Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli to stick this song in the end credits and use Sheryl Crow's cheesy "Tomorrow Never Dies" in the film's title sequence is anyone's guess. "Surrender" sounds like all 23 Bond movies rolled up into a 3:56 song. A four-way with Pussy Galore, Solitaire, and Vesper Lynd wouldn't be half as orgasmic. It's that great, right?
I know, I know—Shirley Bassey's "Goldfinger" is the presumed Top Dog of all the 007 songs. I know it's controversial, but listen to "Goldfinger" and "Surrender" side by side. Which horn section punches harder? Who holds that last note almost twice as long? I rest my case.
No word yet on who Wilson and Broccoli have tapped to sing the Skyfall title song, but if that lucky guy/gal/group knows what's good for them, they'll give k.d. Lang's 1997 David Arnold-produced master stroke a few careful listens.
