'Gotham City Impostors' Release Date Pushed To February

On Jan 05, 2012

If you're anything like me, you have a secret dream of becoming a masked vigilante, dispensing your own brand of justice on the mean streets of a dying cityscape. Sure, being Batman is a dangerous job, but the perk is that you get to be Batman. Sadly, though, most of us can't just abandon our day jobs or pets or loved ones and go off to the fight the good fight where the law dares not. That's where Gotham City Impostors comes in. In our ordinary lives, our vigilante justice is limited to playing a bunch of FreeRice, giving to those Salvation Army bell ringers, and opening doors for grocery-laden neighbors. Maybe, on an especially risky day, we can take an Internet flamer to task or something. That's cool and all, but la vida vigilante demands some more serious measures. Gotham City Impostors, a team-based shooter from Monolith, provides in spades (and hearts, and exploding clubs, if you happen to side with the Jokerz) by allowing players to step into the roles of Batman and his hated foe.

Of course, it's more complicated than that: You don't play as Batman and the Joker, you play as everyday people (read: homicidal maniacs) who want to impersonate them in their absence. And, sadly, you wait until February to do it, as the game's just been delayed.

I was in the beta for this thing and I'll tell it to you straight: It's hecka, maybe even hella, fun. The feel is distinctive and engaging, the shooting action is varied and challenging, and the team dynamics are solid. Still, it doesn't surprise me that this downloadable game needs a little more under-the-hood maintenance before it's unleashed. I'm happy to hear that it's getting more attention, but it's a bummer that we'll have to wait another month. Ah well.
