Citing the economic downturn and the end of multiple wars in the Middle East, President Obama announced a new plan today that would scale down the Pentagon's budget by billions over the next decade. Although these cuts will clearly change the way our military operates, Obama insisted that the new budget would be shaped by strategy, not purely monetary concerns. "We must renew our economic strength here at home, which is the foundation of our strength in the world," Obama explained.
Under the new plan, both the Marines and the Army will see force reductions, since they "no longer need to be sized to support the kind of large-scale, long-term military operations that have dominated military priorities and force generations over the past decades," according to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. Instead, the military will focus on special operations teams, unmanned technologies, and quick mobilization techniques. Also, according to Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Martin Demsey, we will be abandoning the "two war paradigm" left over from the Cold War.
