What Do 'Star Wars: The Old Republic' And 'Footloose' Have In Common?

On Jan 04, 2012

Riddle me this, Bat-Ologist: What do smash hit MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic and 80s classic Footloose have in common? No, Kevin Bacon does not voice a Sith Lord in SW:TOR, as much as we wish he would. Give up? In both the Old Republic and Bomont, you can get in trouble for dancing. Seriously! Like most other MMOs, SW:TOR features a set of emotes available to help characters express themselves. They're a big help on RP servers and they're good for a laugh when you're just hanging out in the cantina, kicking back with buddies and enjoying some tunes. (Or, you know, just that one tune, over and over.) And like its predecessor, inspiration, and main rival World of Warcraft, SW:TOR even has dance emotes, so you can bust a galactic groove whenever the mood strikes. Unlike comparable titles, though, Star Wars: The Old Republic features dance emotes... that can change the course of a fight. Here's how:

Several sources have confirmed that in a combat situation, using the command "/getdown," which makes your character breakdance, interrupts incoming attacks, including boss attacks. It's a pretty hilarious exploit, but it's a serious offense against game balance. Rumors are swirling that EA and/or BioWare has started handing out bans to dancing knights and warriors; even so, BioWare has informed Massively that at least one of those rumored ban e-mails was a fake. Will EA give you the boot for improper use of your dancin' shoes? No official confirmation supports that theory. Still, I'd definitely avoid exploiting the breakdancing glitch to get ahead--if only because once BioWare inevitably fixes the exploit, you'll be wondering how to beat advanced enemies without busting a move.

Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if someone snuck in a goof like this on purpose. I hope the devs and players have a good laugh about it.
