Just a few days after celebrating her 65th birthday and performing her annual New Year's Eve concert in New York, punk icon Patti Smith has announced that she's written a tribute to the late Amy Winehouse. The song, set to appear on her forthcoming new album, was written and recorded on the fly in the studio, she reveals in a new interview with Uncut.

"The little song for Amy just blossomed in the studio," says Smith. "We were Electric Lady [Studious] doing a whole other song and I wrote Amy a little poem when she died and my bass player, Tony Shanahan, wrote a piece of music and the two matched perfectly... We wrote a very nice little song for Amy Winehouse, and I think a beautiful song for Maria Schneider, the actress who was a friend of mine in the '70s. They just happened, like gifts." (via Gigwise)
It's heartening to see so much love for Amy Winehouse STILL pouring in half a year after her death. If you haven't already, get yourself a copy of Lioness: Hidden Treasures. Seriously, you'll throw out all the other records you bought in 2011, I promise.
