Musician, writer, artist and all-around awesome person Patti Smith turns 65 today, and Ology is celebrating by playing "Piss Factory" on repeat. In all seriousness, I'm kind of amazed that Patti Smith has arrived at such a high level of fame in her mid-60s. She has made the move from counterculture performance artist to veritable contemporary hipster goddess seem effortless and dignified, and for that I admire her even more.

U2 Tribute Album To Feature Patti Smith
You can hardly take a subway ride in New York City without seeing a bespectacled white person reading Smith's elegant memoir Just Kids. After achieving success writing poetry and making music, Patti Smith wrote Just Kids in a style that makes readers feel as though they knew her and deceased artist Robert Mapplethorpe personally, which is something all writers of memoirs aspire to but only sometimes accomplish.
We're all happy we have the chance to celebrate Patti Smith's 65th birthday, if for no other reason than we need an excuse to get wasted tonight, too.
