Adele sold a few copies of her second album 21 this year. You might have heard about it. Who knows, maybe you yourself even purchased one. It's very possible. What you might not know is that you're not the only one with a copy—the album topped charts in countries across the globe, smashing sales records and raking in more rave reviews, Best of 2011 rankings, and generally happy thoughts than any other this year. Just to help put it all into perspective, here's a semi-complete list of all the major accomplishments and accolades Adele's 21 earned this year:
- It sold more than 5 million physical copies in the U.S., the first album to do so since Usher's Confessions way back in 2004.
- It peaked at number one in a total of 24 countries.
- It raked in a whopping six Grammy award nominations, including Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Record of the Year.
- It has been entered into the Guinness Book of World Records for the following achievements: first female artists to have two albums and two singles in the UK Top 5 at the same time, the first album to sell three million copies in one year in UK history, and the most consecutive weeks at number one on the UK charts.
- It was nominated for the 2011 Barclaycard Mercury Prize.
- It has topped countless Best Albums of 2011 lists, including Entertainment Weekly, The Associated Press, Rolling Stone, USA Today, and Amazon.com.
- It was regularly handed out to homeless men and women instead of food.
- It killed Osama Bin Laden.
- When laid square upon the gently heaving chests of dying children, its mere presence was proven to cure most types of illness.
- It is the 2012 Republican nominee for President of the United States... and, let's face it, the presumed 45th President Elect.
- It caused at least two or three of 2011's most devastating natural disasters. This one isn't really that commendable... but awe-inspiring nonetheless.
- It lent me cab fare when I really, really needed to get home in a hurry.
