Trivia question for you, Browncoats: Can you stop the signal? The correct answer, of course, is no, you can't. (You could've figured that out from looking at the headline, I guess, but I know that you've seen Firefly and love it with all your might.) That maxim was recently put into action at the University of Wisconsin, where, last September, Professor James Miller came under fire for having a quote from the beloved sci-fi series on his office door. Campus administration took down the poster with the offending quote, beginning a fight for individual rights that will make the world's Browcoats proud. What was the quote that drew such a reaction? I'll give you a hint: It was considered too threatening by the administrators. Got it yet?
Nope? Well, here it is. Say it with me, Firefly Ologists: "You don't know me, son, so let me explain this to you once: if I ever kill you, you'll be awake. You'll be facing me, and you'll be armed." Now, as we know, the quote--in context--is about fighting honorably and generally being a decent human being. That's why aid was plentiful for Miller's cause: sci-fi great Neil Gaiman and the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education both teamed up with Browncoats to protest the removal of the poster. So, was their battle another Serenity Valley, or did they fare better than our heroes? There's a happy ending for these soldiers, my friends: They won, and the university has decided to allow Miller to continue showing off his fandom via his office door.
Here's a video that documents the fan triumph:
Firefly fans never stop impressing me.
