This Book Will Teach You The Wookiee Language

On Dec 28, 2011

Before I get started on this post, I just want to say that if you knew what the Wookiee language was called without having to look it up, you may pick up your Internet cookie wherever Internet cookies are sold. If you don't know what it's called, let me save you a quick Google: Chewie and company speak Shyriiwook. (They're into vowels.) Wookiees can't speak Galactic Basic (though they can understand it) because their vocal cords are just too badass--but it appears that author Wu Kee Smith believes that humans can, indeed, learn to speak Shyriiwook. After all, in the films, Han Solo knew the language well enough to understand Chewbacca, even if he didn't throw his head back and bellow in the language himself.

He might've, however, if he'd had access to the book Learn to Speak Wookiee, a Star Wars tie-in that features instructions and illustrations along with a speaker that produces authentic Wookiee sounds that sync up with the text. It's basically the Rosetta Stone program for Shyriiwook, and how many times do you find yourself needing to speak Shyriiwook in the course of a day? So many. Finally, Star Wars fans have something to compete with Trekkies and their mastery of the Klingon language. OK, so maybe Shyriiwook isn't exactly as advanced as the Star Trek counterpart (yet!) but dude, we Star Wars fans haven't even figured out what we want to be called. We'll get to the whole making-up-a-new-language thing as soon we can.

Anyway, learn to speak the Wookiee language!
