“Duran Duran. They've done New Romantic to funk to house, done them well, and combined them in interesting ways.”

Nell commented on Ology's Battle Of The Fans: '80s Semi-Finals (Duran Duran Vs. Depeche Mode):
“Duran Duran. I'm a fan of both, and have seen both perform, but it was hearing The Chauffeur live that really showed me how much a piece of music can do emotionally even when the lyrics are somewhat abstract.”
All this month here at Ology, we'll be taking a good, long, hard (that's what she said...) look at everything that rocked and sucked in 2011. All the movies, TV shows, albums, celebrity news, and political scandals that filled up our Twitter timelines... and the ones we're more than happy to forget about.
We asked you to tell us which songs mattered to you in 2011, so every day in December, we'll be recapping, rehashing, and remembering the 20 biggest tunes of the year. Which smash singles drove us crazy? Which underground singles are still on constant rotation? Don't worry, we'll let you know whether you want to or not.
Bon Iver "Holocene" (September 2011)
Then:
Justin Vernon's second album as Bon Iver came seemingly out of nowhere to capture the "we only really seem to like to one indie record each year" crowd's imagination, with second single "Holocene" picking up Song Of The Year and Record Of The Year Grammy nominations.
Now:
It's Bon Iver, so of course it's gorgeous—but listening to it again, I don't know, it sounds a little cleaner... a little more "produced" than I'm used to hearing him sound. I'm a huge, huge fan of his first album, For Emma, Forever Ago, and I miss that lo-fi, homemade intimacy that much of Bon Iver traded in for lush, enveloping arrangements. That said, it's kind of remarkable how the song manages to build up to that sweeping climax with such a limited sonic palette (acoustic guitars, a snare drum, a little bit of saxophone, etc.). I don't know if it's necessarily the best song on Bon Iver, but it's a commendably left field choice for all the Grammy awards it's up for. (Would've loved to see the cheesy yet amazingly endearing '80s ballad "Beth/Rest" get a little more love... shrug, maybe next year.)
