When they aren't busy starting Twitter feuds with Bon Iver, Australian sampladelic legends The Avalanches have purportedly been working on a new album, their second and first since 2001's not-so-underground-anymore classic, Since I Left You. Wish there was more to report, but nevertheless, they've dropped what might be the first official indication that: 1.) There really is a new album in the works, and 2.) We might hear some of it this century.
Record Rewind: 'Since I Left You' by The Avalanches
As reported by Pitchfork, the group tweeted the following message today:
"new song 'the stepkids' w/ Jennifer RTX. current album working titles - 'on a saturday' / 'friday night fever'."
(That's Jennifer Herrema of RTX, by the way... presumably on guest vocals.)
The tweet came with a lyrics sheet photo with these snappy lines:
I'll see you by the water where
We can hang out all night
Down by the giant drainpipe
Light firecrackers while we crack cans of beer
If those boys aren't skating there
Maybe we can paint pentagrams and pot leaves on the walls
Imagine finger snapping in the background, it works a little better...
Personally, I think Friday Night Fever makes a better title, but I don't care if they call it Captain Wetpants and the Medicinal Vaccum Cleaner Cantaloupe Monkeys From Katmandu, just finish and release the damn thing already!
