OH. MY. FREAKING. GOD.
I'll be writing an advanced recap--rare in these parts, but necessary when something this monumental occurs--tomorrow morning about the season finale of Dexter, and that review will be full of my thoughts on a lot of what's been wrong with this season. It hasn't been a fantastic one, a very loosely hinged series of conflicts that all seem to have been for naught now that the year in Dexter Morgan murder and lies has ended.
They also seem to have been all for naught when THAT FINAL GODDAMN SCENE JUST HAPPENED (this was my immediate reaction). After six seasons of inching Deb closer and closer to the truth about her brother, the show finally puts her at the point of truth, just as Dexter has stabbed Travis. What this means for Dexter, Deb and Miami Metro is absolutely anyone's guess (CLIFFHANGERS), but it's certainly the best scene the show has had since Rita's death. Michael C. Hall really does some of his best work here, even though I'm not sure how I feel about the last words of the season being "Oh God". It comes off as just another completely unsubtle way the show has thrown in religion, and that doesn't sit quite well with me.
But other than Travis, no other souls were harmed in the making of this finale: Harrison came off unscathed (although part of me was seriously wondering if the show would kill a toddler), and my sleeper kill pick of the night Jamie managed to be saved as well. There were certainly some other ends the show hadn't quite tied up: Dexter never discovered the delivery of the hand (though Travis did), Quinn may be getting transferred out of Miami, and Louis' story never had a proper place in the finale at all, so we're still unaware of his secret connection to Dexter.
Like I've said, there will be a lot more analysis in tomorrow's advanced recap, so look for that tomorrow morning. In the meantime, what do you think of Dexter's sixth season? How about that ending? Was it worth an entire season of mediocrity or does it not matter at all? Let us know in the comments below.
