Let's all just take a second and appreciate the animated brilliance that was Disney's Recess. You can take more than a second if you need it; GeekOlogy. Just... OK, you guys good? Good. Recess was just the best, right? I feel like, for most 90s kids, it hit at the perfect time. Its writing imagined school the way we did: as a complex social world filled with mystery, intrigue, and swirlies. Also, there was an entire gang of girls who shared the name Ashley. Didn't that just make all the sense once you sat and thought about it for a sec?
And the opening! The Recess opening is one of the more memorable intros in 90s cartoon history. With a classic instrumental theme song, a noteworthy economy to its imagery, and, er, a giant kid nomming a sandwich, it distinguished itself as one of the finest. The One Saturday Morning just wouldn't have been the same without it, and now, the Sheridan College Class of 2013 has assembled a proper tribute to the animated icon. They've re-created the Recess opening IRL with a shot-for-shot remake, and damn, it's awesome. Check out the cartoon and the Sheridan version:
The sheer nostalgia is almost impossible to bear! All I wanna do is go and watch a bunch of Recess now. Oh, Spinelli, Gus, how I've missed you guys.
Please share your favorite 90s cartoon memories in the comments and let's make this Friday even more awesome than it has any right to be... before the teachers call us back inside!
