The Bulls made a sneaky pickup yesterday, signing veteran guard Richard Hamilton to a two-year guaranteed deal in a move that was overshadowed by Chris Paulooza.
Hamilton, 33, brings a new dimension of shot-making to a Chicago roster that received little offensive production from their electric off-guard trio, Corey Brewer, Keith Bogans and Kyle Korver. Hamilton's presence alone should make an impact, considering Carlos Boozer, the team's previous veteran leader, was about as reliable as an old Blackberry battery in his first year with the team.
And while it's not a sexy free agent splash, it's a move that gives Chicago another threat, and one that should add balance to a lineup that saw their point guard take 19.7 shots per game.
For those who think Rip's over the hill, just ask D-Wade, who got lit up by "The Mask" for 27 points just last March. With a game predicated on off-ball movement, Hamilton could end up being the best friend Derrick Rose never had.
It was time for a change of scenery for Rip, who's spent the last nine years playing in Detroit, and the last four surrounded by mediorcre and uninspiring talent. It's one of those rare, non-controversial, NBA transactions that should work out for all parties involved.
Until David Stern sends him back.
