President Bill and Secretary Hillary’s daughter, Chelsea Clinton, made her broadcast debut as a features presenter on NBC’s “Rock Center with Brian Williams” on Monday night. Clinton, charged with presenting “feel good” stories for the news magazine program, she traveled to her home state of Arkansas where she profiled the proprietor of TOPPS (Targeting Our People’s Priority with Service), a group which helps primarily black, impoverished children.

Her debut with the segment “helping kids be kids” has been met with some mixed reviews –actually, they aren’t really all that mixed. In fact, it’s about nine tenths bad.
Hank Stuever with the Washington Post writes that it is no shock that Clinton, having never cut her teeth in the business of real journalism, did not display the characteristics of a journalist.
“What was surprising to see on Monday night’s show is how someone can be on TV in such a prominent way and, in her big moment, display so very little charisma — none at all,” writes Stuever. “Either we’re spoiled by TV’s unlimited population of giant personalities or this woman is one of the most boring people of her era.”
Newsday New York’s Verne Gay was equally nonplused with Clinton’s performance. There was nothing else that necessarily dismissed charges (mostly by TV critics, although they were not alone) that she got this job because of that name,” writes Gay. “Her voice -- the first time most of us have even heard it -- was pleasing and plummy, but monochromatic.”
To be fair, POLITICO’s Caitlin McDevitt was kind in her review, saying Clinton made no “fumbles.”
