Man oh man, practically every decent movie ever made is coming out in the next couple weeks. It's a lot for one man to handle, but I'll do my best.
The best new release this week is Jason Reitman's Young Adult (my 4-star review). It's Diablo Cody's best script yet, and Charlize's Theron's most daring role since Monster. Not your typical comedy by any means.
The worst new release is David Gordon Green's The Sitter (my 1-star review), an odious Jonah Hill vehicle that ranks as his lamest comedy to date. This is 2am cable viewing at best, people.
For you fans of independent cinema, this week sees the release of Mark Pellington's I Melt with You, which captures a drugged-out weekend with four stellar actors (Thomas Jane, Rob Lowe, Jeremy Piven and Christian McKay). I didn't much like it, but there's no denying the power of a couple scenes. If you're of the nihilistic bent, you might wanna check it out.
Documentary lovers are in for a real treat with the release of Knuckle (my 4-star review), a raw, two-fisted look at the world of Irish Traveler bare-knuckle boxing. I guarantee you've never seen anything like it.
I didn't get a chance to see Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Tomas Alfredson's adaptation of John le Carré's classic 1974 British spy novel, but it's certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, as is We Need to Talk About Kevin, a psychological thriller about the 15-year relationship between a mother and her malevolent son.
And if you're even considering seeing New Year's Eve, you're officially dead to me.
