In ancient Greece, a philosopher once asked, "Is it possible for Joss Whedon to create a genre film even he can't spoof?" The upcoming horror film The Cabin in the Woods, co-written and produced by Whedon alongside director and co-writer Drew Goddard (Cloverfield), is a living experiment whose goal is the answer to that very question. From what's on display in this here The Cabin in the Woods trailer, it seems the film has established a degree of cinematic equilibrium; it's both a legitimately scary horror movie in its own right and a riff on previous films in the genre. It's got its tongue pressed firmly in its cheek and its sharp implement of choice pressed firmly against the throat of some young thang. Observe, friends:
Creepy people in masks? Check. Suggestion to split up? Check. Unseen horrors rising from the depths of the nearby lake? Er, check. Maybe. This The Cabin in the Woods trailer has everything--which, I guess, is the joke. The exact plot is still more or less out of reach, it seems, but the trailer gives us a pretty good indication of what's to come. Now that the release date of April 13, 2012 looks official, we can all look forward to seeing those oft-discussed effects about which we've heard so much.
What do you guys think of The Cabin in the Woods' trailer?
