Hey, It's The Ology Trailer Awards

Film and TV Editor
On Dec 02, 2011
Part of the perks of being an internet generation is that people take trailers very seriously. Making a good trailer is in many ways it's own art form. This art form was born out of a generation that likes things short, sweet, and sometimes a little spoilery. Since most of my job entails putting up trailers for you, the doting public, I've decided to put together a list of 2011's best. Ologists, I give you the first ever Ology Trailer Awards.

Most Disgusting Trailer:

Red Band Trailer The Change-Up
When this trailer came out I almost got physically ill. When the film came out, I was impressed with the bizarre marketing campaign. I still won't see the film (I have better things to do?) but this trailer will go down as the most crude.

Kinkiest Trailer:

A Dangerous Method
Psychiatry is made better when really sexy guys are talking about sex. The score alone is subtle which makes the hint of S&M that much hotter. Plus, Michael Fassbender.

Most Disappointing Trailer:

Mirror, Mirror
Ever since we've become privvy that there are about a billion Snow White movies coming out next year we've all been silently picking sides. Most of the Ology office went with Mirror, Mirror because Tarsem Singh is a great director and Kristen Stewart is annoying. But then the trailer for Mirror, Mirror came out and everyone collectively farted in disappointment. It just looks ridiculous.

Most Surprisng Trailer:

Snow White and the Huntsman
Conversely, Snow White and the Huntsman actually looks great. The trailer has way better visuals than Mirror, Mirror and we can all take Charlize Theron as a serious threat rather than Julia Roberts.

Best Use of Urination:

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengence
He pees fire. Nic Cage pees fire.

Best Foreign Trailer:

Singham
I have to admit, I think I've watched this trailer more than any other trailer on this list. It's incredible. It has everything you would want in a trailer.

Now, I couldn't decide what was the hands-down best trailer of the year. For this category I want to take into account how many hits the page got and if the anticipation surrounding the trailer itself was buzzworthy. I think the following three movies are prime examples of great trailers because of their anticipation index.

THE BEST TRAILER OF THE YEAR: 3-WAY-TIE

The Dark Knight Rises.
Obviously. The Dark Knight Rises is the most anticpated movie of next year and the teaser trailer basically exploded the internet. It was our first true glimpse of Bane and gave us just the littlest of taste about the plot (Gordon's in the hospital?!) Oh yeah, it's just the teaser trailer. The full legnth trailer (and the prologue) have yet to come out. If this is just the teaser trailer, the real trailer may just blow everyone's minds. The trailer does loose a little with having so many clips from Nolan's previous Batmans'.

The Avengers
The superhero battle heats up as Joss Whedon's Avengers was highly drooled over, but somewhat polarizing. Some people liked the fact that the trailer gave a pulpy impression, while some people liked it for the same reason. This is definitely a different kind of superhero movie from The Dark Knight Rises but it seems to be earning its weight in sure spectacle.

The Hunger Games
This trailer is very polarizing. Some hate it, others have faith that this is just a glimpse of a faithful adaptation. Whereever you lie on that spectrum, you have to admit, it does make you interested to see how director Gary Ross translated the best selling book into film. There also is something to be said about a trailer that sparks so much debate over Hunger Games fans.
