How much would you pay for a copy of Action Comics #1, the comic book that features the first appearance of Superman and is generally considered the most expensive comic book in the world? OK, now how much would you pay for it if it were among the most well-preserved copies available and was once owned by none other than Nicolas Cage? How about $2.16 million? That in the ballpark? If not, there's no way you would've been able to snag the comic book when it sold at auction for precisely that amount--the highest ever paid for a comic book.
There are only around 100 copies of Action Comics #1 kicking around these days, and very few of them are in the kind of condition prized by serious collectors. The Cage copy (so excited that I can call it that) is rated 9.0/10, so you know it's serious business. Apparently, this copy's had an interesting life off the shelf: In 2000, it was stolen from Cage's home, then discovered by some anonymous person who found it in one of those abandoned storage units. Finding the most expensive comic book ever in a random storage locker may be one of the best geek experiences ever known. That owner is still unidentified, but the company that sold the book at auction--ComicConnect/Metropolis Collectibles--played a role in its recovery.
So, right. Just some news about... you know... the most expensive comic book. Carry on, true believers.
