R.I.P. GamePro, 1989-2011

On Dec 01, 2011

You guys remember that time when GamePro?

Yeah, me too.

Just yesterday, the beloved video game magazine announced that its latest issue--the November issue, first in its new quarterly publication schedule--will also be its last. The magazine's website will also be shuttered starting Dec. 5; the announcement indicates that traffic will be redirected to the magazine's PCWorld channel on PCWorld.com. This means, Joystiq's concluded, that the original editorial staff has now stepped down, leaving PCWorld's editors to take up the veteran publication's much-decorated mantle.

Don't worry, though--publisher IDG assures us that while GamePro may be hanging up its controller on the publication front, the magazine will live on through new projects. Specifically, its new mission is "refocusing its US business exclusively on its growing custom publishing and solutions business." That means traditions like the E3 show daily may still survive despite the closure of the magazine and website.

From their innovative coverage to their colorful pseudonym's, GamePro's writers were responsible for some of the most memorable games journalism content from the past two decades. Now, the world's newsstands are populated by just a handful of gaming mags--Nintendo Power, Electronic Gaming Monthly, and GameInformer among them (for the wonderful Kill Screen, you'll have to subscribe!)--but there was a time when gaming magazines ruled the world of geek journalism, and GamePro was their king. Good night, sweet prince, and best wishes to the former staff members.
