Racist Rant By British Woman On Train Results In Arrest, But Is That Fair?

On Nov 28, 2011

The viral video of a British woman engaging in an aggravated, racist rant on a tram in England has resulted in her arrest. The video of the woman shouting racial slurs and profanity on a train while holding a young boy in her lap has sparked outrage among Englanders who took issue with her tirade. The video has resulted in her arrest according to an announcement by the British Transport Police.

"You ain't English... Go back to your own countries. Don't stay in mine. We English ain't nothing now," the woman ranted. While arguing with a black English woman, she screamed in a heavily cockney accent "you ain't English, you're black... Go back to where you come from."

While no one can argue that the woman's rant is both ignorant and offensive, it is a reminder of just how easy it is to take the First Amendment to the Constitution for granted. In America, freedom of speech protects just this kind of behavior, unless it is designed to foment violence (which many have argued that racial animus is intended to do).

What do you think? Should this woman have been arrested for expressing racist opinions? If so, should we have stricter laws curtailing hate speech in this country?
