Judd Apatow Wants A Separate Category For Comedy In The Academy Awards

Film and TV Editor
On Nov 21, 2011

Judd Apatow is making waves today over his twitter war about the Academy Awards. He's spoken out against the fact that comedies are rarely ever nominated for Academy Awards. Apatow tweeted: "Since comedies are rarely up for Oscars it does make sense to have a comedy category. It would just add more fun categories."

Judd Apatow is a very rich man.
Melissa McCarthy signs on for another Apatow film.
Watch the Wanderlust trailer.

I completely agree. While I think that The Hangover 2 doesn't necessarily need to be nominated there are huge oversights in the nomination process. America fell in love with Melissa McCarthy because of Bridesmaids so she should be nominated for something. Putting classic comedy up to Oscar bait is like comparing apples to oranges.

Of course, the Academy Awards are stuffy and they'll probably get around to revising the rules.

Check out a video of Judd Apatow talking about his twitter war here.

What do you think about this whole debacle? Do you think comedies should have its own category in the Academy Awards?
