Over 1,000 Occupy Wall Street protesters in Zuccotti Park in Lower Manhattan were diverted north to Union Square between 14th and 17th streets. Over the course of today's November 17 day of action, NYPD says that more than 170 protesters have been arrested with 7 officers injured. They have not released any statistics on the injuries sustained by protesters.
The live stream from "The Other 99" remains the best place to watch the protests, but the bandwidth has reached its breaking point and the feed is no longer stable.
The protesters will shift their focus to a variety of city college campuses to protest higher tuition costs and student loan debt until early this evening. There will be a group, the "Occupy Student Debt" campaign, will launch Monday and will advocate for the general forgiveness of all student debt. So if you paid your student loans off already, don't you wish you waited a few years—you could have just demanded their forgiveness. Suckers!
The Occupy demonstration plans to make its way down to make its way back downtown to Foley Square at 5 p.m. where thousands are expected to gather. The plan remains to attempt to reenact September's taking of the Brooklyn Bridge. From the bridge, they will head over to Brooklyn College where they will occupy the president's building.
Vice President Joe Biden's wife, Dr. Jill Biden, will be in the city this evening for a fundraiser at the Racquet and Tennis Club on Park Ave. between 53rd and 54th streets between 6 and 8 p.m. It is yet unknown whether she intends to take a car out of the city or hunker down in a hotel room - we advise the latter.
