Neil deGrasse Tyson Did An AMA, And It Was Awesome

On Nov 14, 2011

Neil deGrasse Tyson is the closest thing real life has to Gordon Freeman, and for that, we should all be thankful. When the alien invasion happens, Tyson will surely be on the frontlines, negotiating peace and/or whacking extraterrestrial heads with a crowbar, as necessary. For now, though, he's carrying out other vital missions in the name of SCIENCE! Among those missions? Starting one of the most epic AMA--that is, Ask Me Anything--threads Reddit has ever seen.

Tyson's AMA saw a massive response from science-minded Redditors, who shared their thoughts on life, the universe, and everything. Tyson and co. also had plenty of chances to crack science jokes, which are (as science has determined) the best jokes in existence. The AMA is a historic moment for Reddit, earning more comments than any previous Ask Me Anything thread. The AMA is chock-full of physics, sci-fi, and other geeky goodness; I'm including just a taste here for the benefit of my fellow Ologists. Ladies and gentlemen, Neil deGrasse Tyson.

Tyson's favorite short science fact:

That our bodies atoms are traceable to supernova stars that scattered their chemical enrichment across the cosmos, spawning the birth of star systems that contain planets, at least one of them containing life.

On science discovering the secret of immortality:

Yes, I think it's inevitable. But that would eventually make for a very crowded Earth. So perhaps that's what we need to jumpstart the space program.

Would love to live long enough to know what dark matter and dark energy actually are.

A DIY science experiment woth repeating:

There's no substitute for Oobleck. Easy to concoct in the kitchen. Weeks of amazing experiments on the counter. Google it.

Favorite sci-fi movie:

Three-way tie: The Matrix - The first one, of course. Contact Deep Impact.

And classical have: 2001 A Space Odyssey.

Tons more on Reddit! The AMA itself is the best place to start, but searching for Neil deGrasse Tyson on Reddit will no doubt bear fruit as well.

I think Tyson truly deserves the coveted title, "Science Guy." As proof, I present the following Symphony of Science video. Listen, learn, keep discovering.
