Dan Harmon's 'Community' Rape Joke Really Isn't Going Over Well
God dammit, rape jokes: will a quip that even nudges the idea of sadistic sex-driven violence ever be socially acceptable? Because, apparently Community creator Dan Harmon though that savage imagery was perfectly likable to what it felt like for him to watch an entire season of his show after vacating the job of Executive Producer, and rape evokes feelings just like feelings evoke rape. The actual quote is that his viewing of the NBC comedy's fourth year was like "being held down and watching your family get raped on a beach," which is only odd because I don't know much about beach rape, nor why the completely innocent beach was relevant, but what happened next is sadly typical: the rest of America was like, "um, no." Well, in a Tumblr post that's totally worth your TL;DR, Harmon has ...

'Family Guy' Recap: "Back To The Pilot"

You know, the fact that Stewie and Brian both go back in time to 1999 and Brian tells himself about 9/11 in order to save the world means that they’ve traveled ten years in the past. So they never age at all. That’s a point you should know.

“Back To The Pilot” is a sign of a lot of things, the first of which is that Family Guy is really, really old in case you haven’t noticed. The animations, the voices, the characters are pretty drastically different (most evident in the two Stewies) so this episode is a blatant parody of itself and the show’s history. But “Pilot” is also a blatant sign that Family Guy is still running out of ideas: this is perhaps the last of the good ones, but it’s still not as good as the show can be.

This is unfortunate, because episodes starring Stewie and Brian can usually rank among the best hours of the show, but “Pilot” doesn’t deliver too many jokes. There’s a few physical gags that work, but the scripting is one of the weaker efforts in a pretty weak season. There’s even a reference to a future Family Guy where they comment on just how lazy the show’s gotten, a dangerous statement for a show that’s actually gotten quite lazy.

I didn’t hate “Road To The Pilot”—it’s certainly the best of the season so far—but that’s not saying much at all. It uses typical gags and angles (George W. Bush being an idiot, Matthew McConaughey being terrible, the Kool-Aid man) to make pretty much the same jokes, ten years later. The fact that it can’t even bother to notice and change them is a frustrating issue.

SumOlogy: “If one of me is dead, shouldn’t all the me’s be dead?”

Grade: 7.5/10

That being said, the Kool-Aid guy getting smashed was pretty funny.

Did Brian really use the term “ahoy” that much?

“There’s one tennis ball out there that’s even cooler because I peed on it.”

“You look like a prize at some Mexican church carnival.”

“At least Joe gets to be a cyborg.”

“Here’s a cutaway. Matthew McConaughey is terrible.”

“We made 9/11 happen! HIGH FIVE!” (This one line went a very long way towards me liking the hour, I’ve gotta say.)
