The mother of one of Jerry Sandusky's victims -- known as Victim 1 in the grand jury report -- has spoken twice this week, most recently in an interview with ABC News' George Stephanpoulos. To hide her identity, her voice and visage are obscured.
Asked how her son, now a young adult, has responded this week to what he's seen going on at Penn State, she is quoted saying: "The students of Penn State are not involved in hiding this or doing anything to him. He’s cheering for the team, but as far as the people who hid it, we have no respect for those people."
Her son has already testified to the grand jury, and knows he'll be testifying again when the case goes to trial.
Victim 1 testified to the grand jury that he met Sandusky through the Second Mile program that Sandusky worked with and founded, and had a sustained relationship with Sandusky, in which Sandusky repeatedly abused him. His mother said she became specifically concerned when her son, 10 or 11 years old at the time, came home and asked her about how to look up "sex weirdos," presumably meaning a sex offender registry. When she made further queries with her son, he said Sandusky was a "weirdo," but would not elaborate to her at that time.
So the victim's mother called his school and asked them to pull him aside and address the concerns with him. At this time, she said, the boy revealed to school officials the nature of his interactions with Sandusky.
The mother of Victim 1 and one other mother of a Sandusky victim spoke with the Harrisburg Patriot-News earlier this week. These two interviews constitute the most substantial public comments by the families of Sandusky's victims this week.
