Star Wars references. Easy listening. Busta Rhymes. That flying plane on the map effect from the Indiana Jones movies.
Yoenis Cespedes: The Showcase has them all.
The scouting video for Yoenis Cespedes, a Major League outfield prospect who has recently defected from Cuba, is a 20-minute excercise in absurdity the likes of which only Kenny Powers could ever hope to overtake.
A joint venture between Born To Play Sports Management, Wasserman Media Group, and Cyntergy Fitness, the video is simultaneously puzzling and righteously entertaining.
We are first introduced to Yoenis by a Star Wars style scrolling text that begins with the phrase "A NEW HOPE". If the Spanish voiceover over the new age instrumental backing track is to be believed, Yoennis Cespedes will be the next global superstar in Major League Baseball.
Then comes the easy listening.
There is something about watching a man hit home runs (and stop to admire them, often) behind a soft sounding song with lyrics like "Saiiiling, takes me away to where I'm going" that is strangely comforting, even though it is altogether inappropriate.
After the easy listening hitting extravaganza, we get to see Cespedes in training. This time the music is a collection of contemporary Hip-Hop hits, in all of their un-cut glory. Now, I'm not a Major League GM, but if I was, you can bet that a dirty verse from Busta Rhymes playing behind footage of a guy leg pressing 1300 pounds would pique my interest. Jay-Z gets in on the party with his track "On To The Next One," which plays while Cespedes does core excercies and sprints directly at the camera, shirtless.
The Miami Marlins are said to be the early favorites to land Cespedes, who could be the answer to their center field problem. That move would make sense for the Marlins both on the field and in their coffers, as Cespedes would surely be a favorite among Miami's large Cuban population. The addition of an attendance draw and potential star like Cespedes to the roster could go a long way towards ensuring that as-yet unnamed new Marlins ballpark has more than 17 fans in the outfield grandstand.
You can check out the video below. Do yourself a favor and watch the whole 20 minutes. There is some general revelry and even a (former) NFL player cameo that serves as a nice cherry on top of it all.
Ed. Note: The video has sadly been removed by the user, which is a tragedy the likes of which YouTube has never seen. If and when we find another copy of it, we'll let you know. For now, you'll have to use your imagination.
Ed. Note UPDATE: It's back! IT'S BACK ONLINE! YOU CAN WATCH IT NOW!!!
