Our editor Emily Cheever happily handled our first review of
Allen Gregory, which—surprise—isn’t
an animated series by Seth MacFarlane. It is, however, an animated series by
Jonah Hill, that pudgy kid from Superbad
and Get Him to the Greek who seems
determined to make something of himself, and when life hands you millions of
dollars, make a cartoon. Word.

But Emily had some pretty positive sentiments towards the
show based on its pilot, and while Emily and I agree on most things, I have to
say that I just don’t dig what Allen
Gregory had to offer on any level. The characters are more or less
standard, disappointing when the premise revolves around a 7-year old super
genius, which could have been a pretty interesting dynamic but by the second
episode is almost entirely forgotten. The scripting here is decent at best, but the
supporting characters (tonight noticeably voiced by the likes of Saturday Night Live players Will Forte
and Nasim Pedrad) are what bring an interesting quirk to the show. Allen
Gregory as voiced by Jonah Hill is a pretentious little genius, but he’s also a
terrible bore.
Tonight, Allen is lusting for the principal of the school,
less than attractive by standard standards but his obsession with the thong in
the crack of her rear gets him going. Now that his apparent rival Joel has
landed in a relationship, Allen fibs to dating Principal Gottlieb and now has
to conjure up a sex tape in order to make himself attention-worthy in his new
school. Of course no one buys it—no one even knows what a sex tape is—but it’s
a runaround for Allen as he scrambles to handle a controversy that no one cares
about whatsoever.
Meanwhile, while Robert seems to willingly believe that
Allen has a sex tape with a principal, he isn’t too sure about the fact that
Julie has real friends, but once he learns that they’re losers, he tries to hire her more attractive friends, a hilarious
plot idea that could have been more hilarious in execution. I’ve got some hopes
for this show as we’ll continue to figure it out and it’s got some great voices
in its cast, but the real dud here is Allen himself. And I’m not sure that’s a
problem that can be fixed.
SumOlogy: I do like
Nasim Pedrad and Will Forte here. That’s… about it.
Grade: 6.5/10
Leftovers
All that being said, this recap is written pilot unseen, but I'm far from the only person tonight with the same viewing experience.
I like the two gay dads.
