Parks and Recreation Recap: Season 4, Episode 6, "End of the World" (11/3/2011)
Who doesn't love a good end of the world party? It turns out that the Zorp worshippers, aka The Reasonabilists, aka the cult of Pawnee has predicted that the end of the world is happening. Such events do not scare Leslie Knope- what does scare her is Ben moving on.
With the knowledge of the end of the world celebration, Leslie OKs the Reasonablitsts to perform their ceremonies in the park. There, Ron sells beautiful wooden flutes for $80 and recorders for $150. The cult members laugh when they tell Ron they'll cut him a check that can the cashed the following day. Ben and Chris come to the ceremony, partially out of curiosity and partial damage control. Reporter Shauna is there and Leslie becomes immediately territorial when Shauna and Ben start shamelessly flirting.
With their married life getting somewhat stale, April and Andy decide to tackle Andy's bucket list. They go to the bank and experience what $1K cash feels like in their hands (with 100 dollar bills it's underwhelming, with 1 dollar bills it's awesome), they make the worlds greatest grilled cheese sandwiches, they enlist Jerry's help in an action film. I can't believe I ever doubted these two as a couple, their interactions were great.
Meanwhile, Tom and John Ralphio sit sadly in their old Entertainment 720 complex. The two of them only have $10K each so they decide to throw a huge end of the world party that embodies everything that Entertainment 720 was supposed to be.
In order to prevent Ben and Shauna from hooking up, Leslie takes Ben to an abandoned gas station (she tells him Mick Jagger used to own it). Here we get a very heartfelt moment between Leslie and Ben, something I was aching for last week. Unfortunately it's sad. Ben tells Leslie that they're no longer together and hanging out with each other makes things hard. It's just unfair for her to prevent him from moving on and vice versa. Leslie tears up, I tear up, and if you're a Parks & Rec fan with a soul, I bet you teared up too.
Tom's party is a massive hit- complete with drum line- and Lucy (Tom's ex-girlfriend) shows up to support him. It's very cute and at the very end he gets a kiss. Let's hope this is a sign of positive things to come for Tom.
April and Andy decide to steal April's dad's car to complete one last thing on Andy's bucket list- a drive to the grand canyon. When they get there the view is so beautiful that even April can't come up with anything sarcastic to say.
Leslie apologizes to Ben and says her bittersweet goodbyes. She finally knows that this relationship is over and both of them are clearly crushed about it. Why can't they just make it work? It pains me so.
Obviously the end of the world doesn't happen but the cult insists that their calculations were wrong. They plan the next end of the world date for May 19th- until the park is occupied so they change it to May 20th.
SumOlogy: It's the end of BLeslie (Len?) as we know it, and I feel sad.
Grade: 8/10
