The League Recap: Season 3, Episode 5 "Bobbum Man" (11/3/2011)

More League: Recaps | News | All TV Recaps TVOlogy

This episode of The League starts with the group in their usual spot at the bar, complaining about the internet. Andre is being "that guy" who posts everything he does to Facebook and Twitter and it's starting to get on everybody's nerves. Taco in particular is frustrated with the whole online social networking trend, so he's decided to create his own offline social network called "MyFace." This may seem like a suitable one-off pun to start the show, but no, it just keeps coming back.

Elsewhere, Andre convinces Ruxin to go do yoga with him. Ruxin thinks the whole thing is a bunch of crap, but he's willing to try anything to get out of his recent fantasy football funk. Then, just as they are about to begin the session, Ruxin becomes fixated on the tramp stamp of the woman in front of him and enters lineup nirvana. What kind of brilliant insights can one gain from lineup nirvana? Start Vincent Jackson! Other things that would tell you to start Vincent Jackson include: math, past performance, Matthew Berry, and common sense.

While watching the games that Sunday, Ruxin's lineup nirvana has paid off as Vincent Jackson and Rob Gronkowski run roughshod over Jenny's team. The discussion eventually turns to a game the guys played in college where they tried to create the creepiest and most annoying characters possible in order to force each other off the phone. Ruxin was Korean Dick Vitale, Kevin was Mundane Ejaculation Man, Andre was Crawdad Man, and Pete was Bobbum Man. Those characters should be pretty self-evident aside from Bobbum Man, who was some kind of vagrant who speaks oddly and is obsessed with taking his "equipmunk" to Kevin's "bobbum." This apparently really freaks Kevin out, so we focus on the Bobbum Man jokes and Ruxin's badass Korean Dick Vitale impression is left in the dust.

Next, it turns out Jenny has forgotten her and Kevin's sexiversary. Since Kevin is steadily transforming into every bland sitcom husband ever this season, he decides to make a big deal out of the one time his wife forgets a special date. Jenny, determined to find the day and convince her husband to have sex with her again, tries to find a photo Taco took from that day. This, of course, means more MyFace jokes! See, Taco has a posterboard with a bunch of pictures and posts on it! And he asks personal questions to Jenny to make her "log in!" It's like he's doing computer things, but he's a person! Anyhow, it turns out the date is November 2nd, so mark your calendars.

So that night, Kevin is alone downstairs when he notices his door is slightly ajar. Taped to the front is a creepy note from none other than the Bobbum Man himself. Kevin tries to play it cool, but then the lights go out, only to reveal Jenny looking all sexy for their sexiversary sex. Unfortunately, Kevin ends up being unable to focus because he's still got the Bobbum Man on his mind and even sees a hooded figure in the backyard. This renders the sexiversary considerably less sexy than originally planned.

At the bar the next day, Kevin accuses Pete of impersonating the Bobbum man. Pete has an alibi, however: he and Andre were at the Ke$ha concert. There's no shame in that. As it turns out, the Bobbum Man is actually Rafi. Apparently, Taco recruited Rafi to be the real-world avatar of Rafi on MyFace (which is apparently now borrowing from Second Life as well?), but he's probably taking the role a little too far. A quick trip to Rafi's apartment reveals a wall full of chairs, a sh*t-stained mattress, and a MyFace wall full of knives and people's asses.

As Pete and Kevin are walking home, talking about the Bobbum Man and how Pete is disappointed with Rafi's interpretation of the character, they notice a strange hooded figure. They run, only to be followed by the shady character talking about bobbums. We know that it's only Andre, who has costumed himself in order to get back into the yoga studio that he and Ruxin were banned from. Andre is also leaving a message for Ruxin about brutalizing his bobbum because... well, they needed a reason for him to talk about bobbums. Anyways, Kevin and Pete jump the supposed Bobbum Man, only for Rafi to drive up as well and also start beating on Andre. Andre reaches line up nirvana, Rafi suggests killing Andre and hiding the body, and the episode ends.

SumOlogy: The central jokes of this episode were, in my opinion, awful. The MyFace bit wasn't very original and I liked Bobbum Man the least of all the "phone chicken" characters. It was still funny at points, but there was a lot of filler.

Grade: 5/10

Leftovers

Seriously, more Korean Dick Vitale. Find a way, people.

"She told me to go do an inversion during my moon cycle."

I kind of hate husband Kevin. I feel like he and Jenny are both good characters in the group, but get them alone and they become this trite, bickering sitcom couple.
