On TV, Olivia Holt plays a fearless and kick-ass girl who's not afraid to run with the boys. In real life, well, it's pretty much the same deal. Disney XD’s Kickin’ It premiered in June and it’s been a crazy ride for the show’s
budding actress, Olivia Holt. Ology talked with the peppy and
startlingly eloquent 14-year-old and got all the details on her goofy cast mates, celebrity crush and singer/songwriter aspirations.
OLOGY: Tell me a
little bit about your character on Kickin’
It.
Olivia Holt: I
play Kim Crawford. She’s a really confident girl and she can go toe-to-toe with
any guy. She’s girly but she also has that tomboy style and doesn't mind
hanging out with the guys. So I think it’s really cool she has both kind of
styles.
Can you relate to the
character?
Oh yeah, I can relate to her both girly wise and tomboy
wise. Her style is really girly but I don’t mind hanging around the guys
either. I think it’s really cool we both have those characteristics.
I love how she defies
the stereotypical female TV role…
Exactly, she can kick some serious butt.
I just saw Kickin It was signed on for another
season. Have you guys started filming yet?
We haven’t yet, but I've been hearing that we start filming
end of November beginning of December.
So how did you get
started in acting?
Well, I started when I was really little, my sister used to
write little plays and we would hang out and put them on for my family. Then I
started doing local theater and it started from there. I really loved
pretending to be a character and I loved acting out everything. And I loved acting
ever since I started.
Was Kickin’ It your first big project?
I would say this is my first big break but I have worked on
things before. I’ve done commercials and small films but this is my first big
thing so it’s really exciting.
So what’s it like
being one of the only girls on set? Is it exciting or more intimidating?
[Laughing] No, it is exciting. I love the guys--I love going
to work and getting to hang out with them. Of course they’re boys, so I have to
listen to the fart jokes all day long. But it’s a new experience and it’s
actually a lot of fun!
Do you have any fun
stories from on set?
I do actually! I’m the only girl so of course they love to
prank me. And I’m a big scared-y cat, so I can’t tell you how many times I’ll
be walking down the hallway, minding my own business, and then they’ll pop out
of a corner and scare me and I’ll fly against the wall because I’m so scared.
It’s great though. We have so much fun. We have Nerf wars on set and we love
pranking each other.
I saw that the show
is the highest premieres on Disney XD. What’s that been like?
It’s really great. When I go out to the movies or something
there will be kids who recognize me and I think it’s so cool. It’s great for me
and my family too because they’ll be like ‘hey that kid recognizes you.’ Its
great that kids watch the show and they’ll tell me how much they love it and it
makes me feel so great knowing I get to make kids smile everyday.
If you could have any
actress or actor guest star on Kickin It,
who would it be?
Once of my favorite actresses is Kate Hudson. She’s hilarious and I would love to have her
on the show because I think she has great comedic timing and she’s really
strong. I think she would be pretty great on the show.
Do you want to stick
with comedy or are you looking for more diverse roles?
I love comedy but a drama would be cool. It doesn’t matter
though, I love to work and I love to act so anything I can pretend to be I’m up
for!
Do you have any
spoilers yet for the next season you can share? Do you have a script yet?
No, we don’t. I’m really looking forward to what’s going to
happen next season. I’m pretty sure me and the guys will be going on a whole
lot more adventures and we are going to bond and I’m hoping I’ll get to see my
character sing. So that’s what I’m looking forward to most!
Are you a singer?
I am a singer, so I’m hoping they’ll write something in
there.
So do you want to
follow the whole Miley Cyrus track- Disney star turned singer?
[Laughs] Absolutely yes! I’ve been singing for a really long
time and I want to peruse that career as well. So I’m trying to get started on
recording music.
What is your music
genre?
I have a huge range that I love but I would say pop maybe a
little bit of country, and singer/songwriter, I’m into all that stuff.
Who are your favorite
artists?
I love Bruno Mars! He’s one of my favorites. I love Taylor
Swift and Rihanna and I know they are totally different but I love all types of
styles.
I’ve read you’re a
competitive gymnast. Did that help you with the martial arts training you need
for the show?
Yeah it definitely helped me with martial arts. I did
gymnastics for about seven years so when we did boot camp before we started the
show I felt it was so much easier. A lot of the moves I do in gymnastics helped
with martial arts.
What was this boot
camp like?
Since I never did martial arts a day in my life, they taught
us basic moves we have to do throughout the show. I had never considered doing
martial arts and now that I’m doing it, I love it and I want to keep continue doing
it.
Where do you see
yourself in a few years? Do you want to continue gymnastics or concentrate on
acting?
I definitely want to be acting. Gymnastics is something that
I love to do when I’m not working but in a couple years from now I want to be in
films and pursuing my dream of acting.
Gymnastics isn't
exactly a career option you could do your whole life either…
Exactly, I love gymnastics but it’s really just a hobby.
I know you’re friends
with Shake it Up actress, Bella
Thorne. How did you become friends?
We’re in the big Disney family so we met through that and my
best friend Jadin Gould, she’s really good friends with her. So we met at a
birthday party and just clicked and we’ve been friends for a couple months.
It’s cool to have a friend in the acting business [that] understands everything
that’s going on. She’s a great girl.
I know her birthday
was a couple weeks ago; did you celebrate it with her?
I did. Me and her and a couple of her friends all went to
Disneyland and celebrated her birthday there.
So what’s it like
juggling filming with friends, family and school?
It’s definitely a challenge but I manage to try to keep it
under control and stay grounded. It’s not as glamorous as some people think it
is, so it’s hard to explain it to people who don’t understand.
Are you in public
school or home schooled?
I’m in a homeschooling program right now. When I’m on set I
do school with the guys. When I’m not working I’m doing it at home.
What do you like to
do in your free time?
When I’m not working I go the beach with my family all the
time. I try to hang out with my friends because when I’m working I don’t really
have time to hang out with them. Basically I try to hang out and have fun. And
then once I get back to work it’s back to business.
I have to ask. Any
celeb crushes?
Oh my goodness I do. I would say Taylor Lautner. He’s a
cutey.
Our website is all
about being passionate. What are your three Ologies?
I’m passionate about my
family. I love being with them everyday and I’m very blessed they have
supported me through all this. I’m passionate about my career. I love what I do and I hope I can continue to do it and
become a better and stronger actress as I go along. I guess I’m just passionate
about life, I’m hoping that
everything will turn out great!
