October 23rd is a pretty awesome day to be a Geek. Are you a big fan of chemistry? Well, today is Mole Day. Do you like parodies? Weird Al Yankovic was born today in 1959. Do you like GeekOlogists? Well, it also happens to be my birthday too, so we've got you covered. But even if you're not into video games and science, there's plenty of reason to celebrate the 23rd day in October, because it's also the anniversary of the iPod, and you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who hasn't been affected in some way by Apple's revolutionary music playing device.
It may not be the latest and greatest Apple gadget anymore, but let's take a look back at some of it's highlights:
2001: Apple releases the original iPod.

The original iPod looks like a giant white brick compared to later models, but it is the giant white brick that changed how people listen to music. It's 5GB of memory is also considerably smaller than newer models, but seemed like a pretty incredible amount of music at the time. It also wasn't available to Windows users, though that would change with 2002's update. If you want to see what people thought about the iPod at its release, check out this New York Times article from 2001. In 2004 they would integrate color screens and photo viewing, while 2005 would bring video playback.
2003: The Silhouette Ads
While not actually a new model, 2003 marked the release of the iconic "Silhouette" ads. These ads become synonymous with the iPod and Apple's brand identity and are still some of the most iconic advertisements in recent history.
2004: The iPod Mini

This smaller redesign of the classic iPod didn't hold as many songs, but it had a much slimmer and smaller profile as well as the new "click-wheel." Both the reduced size and new wheel would go on to influence pretty much all subsequent models of iPods. It would eventually be replaced in 2005 by the "Nano" models, which were even smaller.
2005: The Shuffle

The iPod nearest and dearest to my heart, because it was my first. The original model was basically a glorified USB memory stick. It had a headphone jack and a simplified version of the larger iPod's buttons, but no screen and no way to select specific songs once you were away from your computer. Later versions would move away from the USB stick design and go to a square shape that was even smaller.
2007: iPod Touch

Released at the same time as the new iPhone, the iPod Touch was basically a weaker iPhone without the phone. The large touch screen and black coloring departed from the typical iPod design in favor of the new iPhone look. This iPod has considerably more capabilities than its older brethren, with access to the App Store allowing it to play all kinds of games and run many different utilities.
