And all the publishers and executives will look up and shout, "Sequel!" And I'll look down and whisper, "No." And then they'll probably do it anyway.
--From the journal of Alan Moore
The idea of a Watchmen sequel has been a topic of discussion in the DC world for years now--and the release of the moderately-successful Watchmen movie against Alan Moore's wishes has only intensified debate over the fate of the landmark limited series. Now, reports out of New York Comic Con suggest that DC may be redoubling its efforts to create a follow-up to Watchmen. DC's approached Alan Moore and even promised to return the rights to Watchmen, but that arrangement went nowhere. Now, new creators are on the table. The consensus is that Darwyn Cooke is at the top of DC's list, with J. Michael Straczynski, J.G. Jones, Andy Kubert, and Brian Azzarello all in the running.
It's a dream team--but can anyone make a worthy sequel to Watchmen when Alan Moore is so against the project? And does Watchmen really need a sequel at all? Fans seem pretty split on the issue, and the battle is only going to get more and more fierce as time passes: We hear DC's got a secret meeting going down this week, concerning a new secret project using the codename "Panic Room." It's positively Hmmm-tastic!
