Apple's innovative Siri is causing quite the stir. Though disappointed over Apple's proud unveiling of its latest iPhone 4S, the public is responding to the Siri program with an energetic mixture of enthusiasm and wariness.
Perhaps it's fear of a real-life HAL 9000 or plain old cynicism that is causing people to poke at Siri's potential limitations. Well after some poking, the folks at 9to6Mac have found this video of a bewildered Siri unable to understand a Japanese man speaking English.
Man,"What weather for today?" - Siri, "...which Linda?" (cue: awkward tension)
Poor Siri has no idea what the man is saying, which is perfectly reasonable because... well, it is a computer program still in development. Siri is unable to comprehend thick-accented English because- let's admit, uttering something in a heavy accent can sound like a number of things.
The world rightfully wants Siri, an international product, to be a multilingual computer program and thus accessible to all speakers. In response, Apple is still working on improving Siri. But for now, only English, German and French speakers will have the privilege of bantering with the lively Siri.
