Speculatron: Was The Kraken Real?

On Oct 11, 2011

The bubbling sound you hear, GeekOlogist, is the newest attachment we've affixed to our high-tech rumor mill, the Speculatron. Now, we can take the device underwater to scan for rumors, speculation, and unconfirmed information. The Speculatron's first aquatic find? Evidence that the kraken may have been real

Paleontologist Mark McMenamin of Mount Holyoke College has found a suspicious arrangement of bones beneath the waves. The remains might suggest the existence of a prehistoric beastie similar to today's octopi... except way, way bigger. The deal is this: McMenamin has just discovered a pile of ichthyosaur bones stacked the same way fish bones are by present-day octopi outside their dens. As you might recall from Half-Life, ichthyosaurs are pretty big and fairly nasty, so anything capable of killing and eating these ancient creatures, then arranging their remains into a decorative lawn ornament would have to be appropriately gigantic. Moreover, the bones were not all deposited at the same time, meaning the kraken (such as it is) was on a killing spree.

There have been some accusations McMenamin's research is shoddy, and of course a great story does not conclusive evidence make. That said, if this guy discovers that the kraken was real, I'm gonna flip out. And then I'm going to apologize to Davy Jones for all those times I called him a noob.
