The original "Big Ben" is now the only Big Ben to have been arrested, thanks to the generally slippery Ben Roethlisberger's uncanny ability to escape handcuffs. Ben Wallace was arrested on drunk driving and weapons charges last night after he was pulled over in the Detroit area. Police searched his 2007 Escalade and found an unloaded pistol in the glove compartment, which is WAY lamer than finding a shotgun in a guitar case. Ben Wallace, you are no Delonte West.
Wallace, 37, was released on $5,000 bond. He's been on the decline for a while ago, and the fact that he's driving a 2007 Escalade pretty much tells you all you need to know about the last time a team was willing to pay millions of dollars for Wallace's services. Still, Wallace was one of the league's toughest and most popular players at the peak of his abilities. He was the only guy who could air ball free throws yet still command a starting spot on the Detroit Pistons, who won the 2004 NBA Championship. I haven't even begun talking about his legendary afro. That's probably a separate post of 15,000 words. We at SportsOlogy hope that Big Ben can get off these charges. For now, we remember him at his best.
