Each year, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (located in the very rock and rolling Cleveland, OH… you’re welcome, Chelsea) presents its list of induction nominees, and each year, I find myself pulling out hair (my own… usually) and yelling, “So-and-so aren’t in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame already?!” or “They’re going to put so-and-so in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame before so-and-so?!”. This year is somewhat of a mild exception—take a look at the shortlist:
The Cure
Joan Jett and The Blackhearts
Heart
Freddie King
The Small Faces/The Faces
The Spinners
Beastie Boys
Donovan
Laura Nyro
Red Hot Chili Peppers
War
Eric B. & Rakim
Guns N’ Roses
Rufus with Chaka Khan
Donna Summer
Here’s a quick statement from Hall of Fame President/CEO Joel Peresman (via Rolling Stone):
"The 2012 Nominees embody the broad scope of what ‘rock & roll’ means… From vocal groups to hip-hop, from singer-songwriters to hard rocking artists, this group represents the spirit of what we celebrate at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.”
Yes, by “broad scope”, he means, “We’re going to put a bunch of hip-hop, folk, and R&B artists in there, too”.
Nothing too controversial here, honestly. I’d love to see Guns N’ Roses make the cut purely to put pressure on Axl and Slash to reunite on stage. The Beastie Boys have been nominated before, and it’d be great to see them get their due recognition, but c’mon, you know what I’m going to say—I’m freaking out that I’m not the only one who still thinks The Cure are a huge deal. The thought of Robert Smith and his giant oversized hockey jersey sauntering onto that stage to play right after the Chili Peppers or Joan Jett… priceless.
