The mainstream music press has relished in making a fuss over the 20th anniversaries of Nirvana’s Nevermind and U2’s Achtung Baby, but nobody seems to be making much noise about that other landmark album released in the fall of 1991: Scottish rockers Primal Scream’s seminal dance-rock masterpiece Screamadelica, winner of the first annual Mercury Prize. Released in the U.K. 20 years ago today, the album was the first to fuse classic rock n’ roll with house music, trance, dub, and other underground dance floor sounds. The result is a psychedelic tour de force that’s rightly remembered as one of the most innovative, influential records ever recorded.
