H8R Review: Season 1, Episode 1 (9/14/2011)
H8R airs Wednesdays at 8pm on The CW.
Lets just look past the fact that the title of this show has a f*cking number in it. The premise of H8R is this- Mario Lopez finds unfamous people with no talent that hate famous people with no talent. Then he shoves those two people in front of a camera and hopes that they get along.
Or hopes that they end up still hating each other. Doesn't really matter.
Mario- in a Bing commercial- explains that the show is intent on stopping bullying practices. Does it? I mean, if anything it definitely portrays the "H8Rs" as HUGE assh*les. Huge. I don't even think I can come up with someone I hate as much as these people hate certain celebrities due to something that they've read online or in a tabloid.
Granted, that stuff makes the entertainment world go round- I wouldn't have a job if people didn't want to know the dirt on certain celebrities sometimes. But to be so vicious about it...really kinds of makes your skin crawl.
The celebrities featured in this episode were Snooki and Jake Pavelka from The Bachelor. Snooki was completely torn apart by her H8R Nick who said things like "you're a drunk donkey." Snooki didn't really come across that great either, but not because she was mean, she was just being Snooki. Anyway, she cooks dinner with his family and then eventually wins his approval. Surprise, surprise.
The real surprise of the episode was Jake and his H8R Danielle. Mario has this ingenious idea that Jake should first act like the guy who Danielle thinks he is (fame whore, arrogant, douchey) then be all like "oh, JK, I'm not that guy." Yet he kind of is. Maybe I'm the H8R now but Jake has all the charm of a plaster wall. Despite taking her out on a plane and crying while pleading his case, Danielle remained stubborn and continued to hate on Jake. He was sad, but I doubt he'll looks sleep over it.
Overall, the show did lack a little bit of luster despite the interesting concept. It definitely encouraged me to stop talking sh*t (well, maybe less sh*t) because mean people are ugly. Speaking of ugly...did you see Jake's shirt? Oops. Now I've gone and ruined my L<3R streak.
