Smashing Pumpkins fans –– if you haven’t already signed up for the totally completely 100% free online Smashing Pumpkins Record Club, then, frankly, you don’t really even deserve to hear a newly unveiled Siamese Dream-era track called “Barb Wire.” Still, out of the kindness of my heart, I’m going to share it with you all –– with the understanding that yes, you’ll hop over to smashingpumpkins.com and register your e-mail and get access to tons and tons of unreleased and rare Pumpkins stuff.
As SPIN points out, the song sounds like an early version of Pumpkins rarity “Tulips” –– heavy bass line, dense layers of distorted guitars, and vocals buried ridiculously low in the mix. I always thought the guitar tones on Siamese Dream were Corgan’s best ever, so it’s great to hear him and James Iha really letting it rip. Probably belonged on the cutting room floor in ’93, but it’s an amazing listen for us die-hards.
