Prabal Gurung was very, very naughty.
The American designer debuted a sort of structured flimsy today, taking sheer to its most literal with a diaphanous, mesh-netting motif, along with sexy silhouettes and high necklines that weren't a far cry from his Resort 2012 offering. The looks were unexpectedly tied together with the provocative, waist-cinching harnesses by way of Zana Bayne, and with Japanese fetish photographer Nobuyoshi Araki cited as inspiration, Prabal's uber-fem cuts and ingenious use of Rorschach in a royal color palette (purples, blues, and a standout turquoise blue) proved to be a refreshing change from autumnal hues. It was perfect.
Also featuring a juxtaposition of perfectly tailored blazers and structured trouser-shorts, the show was opened by Caroline Brasch Nielson and was followed up by an impressive cast, including Liu Wen, Lindsey Wixson (who let out an involuntary smile that killed me), Karlie Kloss, Arizona Muse, Hailey Clauson, Daga Ziober, Josephine Skriver, Nyasha Matonhodze, Patricia van der Vliet and one of my favorite newbies to watch, Antonia Wesseloh. I just noticed that for the last look, I wrote down "Frida G" atop a chicken-scratched "poodle-chic -amaze" and I really can't think to describe it any other way. Everything was just so...sexy!
The collection's fem cuts played well with a berry lip and matching dark nail combo, which Prabal designed himself in collaboration with Sally Hansen. Though he chose to send his models down the runway wearing the deep plum hue, "Loves-Me-Not," the designer's polish collection also includes shades "Barely Bluebell" and "Purple Posy," — the same refreshing turquoise and light royal purple Mr. Gurung employed for his spring threads.
And as for Nicki Minaj's relation to the brand? Turns out her stylist (who should probably be fired) introduced her to Prabal, and she said something to the tune of, "He has purple, you know, and that’s my color." So there you have it, the depths of Nicki Minaj's inspiration run...deep.
Anyway, check out the entire collection and let me know how impressed you are in the comments below!
