A grainy video of a cell phone video, released by ABC News on September 2nd, appears to show a group of U.N. peacekeepers sexually assaulting an 18-year old Hatitian boy. The boy's face has been edited out of the video, rendering the quality pretty poor, but he appears to be struggling against men in U.N. uniforms with the trademark sky blue berets. I don't understand the language being spoken in the video (French, I'd imagine?), but there definitely appear to be sounds of struggle coming from the boy and copious laughter from his captors. Here is the video, though it manages to be both rather unclear and quite disturbing:
Haitian officials are currently investigating the assault, and the boy's mother and father have sought to enter criminal charges against the peacekeepers, who are from Uruguay. The defense minister of Uruguay has also expressed concern and begun his own investigation into the incident. No matter what the result is, this event only serves to deepen the mistrust Haitian locals have for the U.N. peacekeeping forces. Though these soldiers may not be the norm among U.N. peacekeeping forces, this kind of incident could destroy the reputation of the PEacekeepers and destroy their ability to do their jobs.
