The swaggeriffic Texas Gov. Rick Perry
is learning that his base of support does not extend very far into Romney
Country.
Perry held a condescending conversation
with a youngster in New Hampshire over the weekend in which he explained to the
wide-eyed lad that evolution is a theory that “is out there” and it has “some
gaps in it.” In a sign of Perry’s faith in the next generation, he said that they teach both creationism and evolution in
Texas and that he trusts the little
one to know “which one is right.”
Someone, maybe mom, didn’t take
kindly to this. She repeatedly told the kid to ask Perry “why he doesn’t
believe in science.” The child, appearing torn, declined to respond to Perry. Poor kids, always a battleground between mom and presidential candidates.
It was at this point that a rabid progressive started
repeatedly screaming “hands off our Medicare,” and “stop attacking middle class
families, Rick Perry.”
Personally, I think mom had a point
while the gentleman in the background screaming sounded like an ass. Mom
appeals to the swing vote, while screaming guy has adopted Talking Points Memo’s
attack line du jour.
Perry has rocketed into a narrow
second place against Romney in the race for the Republican presidential nomination.
Recent polling has shown that Romney continues to perform much better than
Perry in the Northeast, California and Florida. However, Perry is closing the
gap in a number of important states and he recently picked up several key
endorsements in the firewall primary state of South Carolina—a state where the
GOP establishment shines and which usually endorses the ultimate nominee.
