'LEGO Universe' Free-To-Play Now Online

On Aug 15, 2011

Pop quiz, GeekOlogist! What force powers the entire geek movement? If you said "Mountain Dew!" you get a consolation prize, which, at time of print, is an Internet cookie and a firm handshake. But if you said "Imagination," you get the grand prize, which is a chunk of MMO LEGO Universe, absolutely free!

Just kidding. Everybody gets that!

LEGO Universe is a combination between your basic MMORPG--by which I mean World of Warcraft, natch--and an actual, physical box of LEGO bricks. The main difference between the online LEGOs and their real-world counterparts is that you don't risk stepping on them in the dead of night after you've neglected to clean up your spaceships and castles and what have you. You also don't have to fight your kid brother for that one piece you need. Instead, you have to fight the Stromlings, evil minions of the Maelstrom that threatens the entire LEGO universe. It is possible your kid brother is in league with the Stromlings; please check him for menacing purple glow immediately.

Anyway, the fight against the Maelstrom will soon see an influx of new recruits: The free-to-play option for LEGO Universe is now up and running. This means you can hop on, dowload the game client, and play through a limited collection of in-game content. Without paying a dime, you'll explore adventure zones, join the Nexus Force, collect bricks to build LEGO models, and even play the Survival minigame. If you want access to more zones, character slots, and upcoming content (including a bunch of Ninjago stuff that's soon to come for Universe players) you'll have to become a subscriber and pay $10/month for the privilege. Still, at least you won't be making that decision uninformed--the free trial goes as long as you like, so feel free to run around and see all there is to see before you commit.
