Romney was confronted in Iowa by a group of irate citizens, who by their questions appeared to be Democrats, and seemed to get Romney to sweat a bit.
“Social Security cannot legally add a single dime to the deficit,” said one heckler. “Do you agree that Social Security should play no part in deficit reduction negotiations?”
“Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid amount to half of federal spending,” which is not true now, but in short order that will be the case.
“You support scrapping the social security payroll cap so that rich people pay their share into the trust fund,” shouted another heckler.
There was a time in this country when we didn’t celebrate attacking people because of their success,” replied Romney. It was not long before he was again cut off.
Later, Romney said what has been keeping the twitter-verse ablaze in debate. The “My friends,” said Romeny, channeling McCain circa ’08, “Corporations are people.”
Good lord. Please, speed up your delivery Rev. Al:
The angle on this from the Democratic side of the aisle is that this highlights what people hate most about Republicans; that they care more for corporate profits than the middle class. Republican voters, meanwhile, really do not see the controversy in this statement because they do think corporations are people –– at least, they are not steel and concrete buildings, or a glut of dollars existing in limbo. Along with “weird,” Democrats are already pulling ads together on that one. We’ll see if it sticks.
