“Duran Duran. I'm a fan of both, and have seen both perform, but it was hearing The Chauffeur live that really showed me how much a piece of music can do emotionally even when the lyrics are somewhat abstract.”
Bone Thugs caught a snag with the lukewarm reception of
their third album Art of War in ’97, and while there’s a few gems amidst what’s
been labeled as humdrum in quality, the Pac-featured track “Thug Luv” is easily
one of the collective’s finest productions.
So goes the story, Pac dropped in on the studio for a quick
minute, wrote up and recorded his verse in something like 2:30, and dipped,
which truly shows the extent of his talent considering the quality and depth of
the sounds. DJ U-Neek provides the gunshot-rife instrumentals to breathe the
unspoken street into the track, and, at least on my late-90s list, “Thug Luv”
sits high on the heaviest records slots.
As for the remainder of the BTNH crew, Bizzy’s opening verse
is not only one of the most impressive of his career, but is exemplary of how
to rip the skin from a beat and vocally maul the instrumentals. The usuals do
their usual alongside Pac and Bizzy (Wish Bone’s bars at the closer provide a
solid slam transition from the double time speed), and overall, “Thug Luv” is
something of a lyrical goliath.
It's about as close as you can climb toward
flawlessness, at least by my ears, so give it a check.
