Newt Gingrich, Tim Pawlenty, John Huntsman, Herman Cain, Ron Paul, Michele Bachmann, Rick Perry, (probably) Sarah Palin - still not enough potential Republican nominees for the 2012 presidential election? Weekly Standard editor William Kristol agrees. In Kristol's ideal world, the Republican ticket in 2012 would contain two of the young stars of the party, Paul Ryan and Ricky Rubio, neither of whom has thrown their hat into the ring.
"Ryan-Rubio or Rubio-Ryan would be a very strong ticket," Kristol said on Fox News Sunday. "I think it should be Ryan-Rubio, but if Paul Ryan is a little hesitant to seize the moment, I think Marco Rubio will have to do it and make Paul Ryan his vice president." Neither Ryan or Rubio has openly expressed interest in running at this time, with Paul Ryan even denying interest a couple times already.
Kristol does have a point, though. Ryan and Rubio are both peaking in popularity right now, with Ryan quickly becoming the young face of fiscal conservatism and Rubio riding high off his win in Florida. It also doesn't hurt that the ticket would have two things most Republican candidates lack: youth and, in Rubio, a hispanic background. Being able to draw in traditionally Democratic Hispanic voters could easily mean the difference between a win and a tough loss for the GOP in 2012.
