The world can be a cruel place, GeekOlogists, but we'll always have Yoshi's Island.
Considered one of the greatest SNES games--and one of the best platformers of all time--Yoshi's Island expanded on the platforming glory achieved by its predecessor, the original Super Mario World. Featuring diverse, colorful environments, clever mechanics, and a timeless story, Yoshi's Island is a definitive platformer for a gamer generation. There's just something so undeniably cheery about the tale of a faithful dinosaur rescuing a helpless Italian baby from a turtle-wizard! It's classic Nintendo, and thankfully, it has survived into the current console generation. How has Yoshi's Island persisted where other titles have been forgotten? Equal parts sheer quality and truly incredible parenting.
YouTube's troymcklure2002 is keeping the magic of Yoshi's Island alive by housing offspring in a nursery inspired by the classic SNES game. As you'll see in the video below, the nursery features all kinds of adorable decorations and Nintendo trinkets. Its central feature, however, is an impressive Lakitu/Yoshi mobile. Controlled by a SNES controller and equipped with songs from both Super Mario World games (including the music box theme!), it's an artifact of geek culture you have to see to believe. And see is precisely what you're about to do--the video's right here. You "d'awwww," you lose.
EVERYONE LOST. EVERYONE. Well, everyone except for the lucky Baby Mario (or Peach) who gets to live in this Nintendo wonderland. Kinda makes you OK with the world, doesn't it? Even in times of terror and despair, even when things seem darkest, there's always a little music box quietly singing to the heart of a tiny geek-in-training.
This is quite possibly the happiest post I have ever written for Ology. Thanks, Yoshi! And thanks, troymcklure.
