“Holocene”, the second single from Bon Iver’s self-titled new album, drops September 5th with one hell of a b-side: a folksy interpretation of Peter Gabriel’s 1992 single “Come Talk To Me”.
The tune, originally released as an exclusive Record Store Day title, is Justin Vernon’s quid-quo-pro response to Gabriel’s take on Bon Iver’s “Flume”, from his 2010 covers album Scratch My Back. That album’s planned follow-up, I’ll Scratch Yours, is set to include the artists covered by Gabriel taking cracks at some of his songs in return.

It starts off maybe a little too banjo-heavy, but finally builds into that soaring crescendo that made the original so memorable. Vernon’s voice is, as always, hauntingly effervescent, sometimes sounding barely there at all over the surging keyboards and thumping drums.
