TV Review: 'It's Worth What?'

On Jul 20, 2011

It's Worth What? Review: Season 1, Episode 1 (7/19/2011)

It's Worth What? airs Tuesdays at 8pm on NBC.

There is very little I want to say about NBC’s new game show that premiered last night called “It’s Worth What?”  And I’m sure, SURE (which soon became the catchphrase of the show).

It’s a bizarre mix of several Price is Right segments and a Weakest Link type of banking system, where two contestants try to guess which items presented to them are worth more and then banking money if they win the round. Cedric the Entertainer, from The Steve Harvey Show, acts as the show’s unfunny, but fedora-clad, host.

This week, the contestants are Melissa and Annabel, an odd pair, who have a tenant/landlady relationship. Melissa can’t seem to stop jumping around in excitement throughout the show, while Annabel smiles and waves her arms occasionally while telling Melissa to calm down, in a soft British voice. They get through the first round easily, by guessing correctly that a 1970 Plymouth Hemi “Cuda” convertible is worth more than the Ms. USA diamond and emerald crusted crown. From that point forth, each round of the show is essentially the same, with slight variations.
-What worth more? An illustrated copy of Moby Dick or a Wayne Gretsky signed hockey stick?
-Put these real estate listings in order of least to highest value.
-Dress Cedric in the most expensive outfit!
-And so forth.

The three move around the garish set as they take part in the different rounds and attempt to charm the audience and come up with clever banter. Unfortunately, they fail at both, especially Cedric, who at one point compares a skeleton of a bear from 150,000 BCE to Joan Rivers. But, as seen in last week’s episode of Louie, Rivers may be old…but she’s still funny AND wise. That being said, the fault cannot and should not be placed entirely on the host but rather on the weak concept and material that comprise the show.

In the end, the pair wins 80,000 in a game that is won more through chance than skill and knowledge. I have no idea what makes a show last but something tells me that this one can’t go on for very long. If it does then something has gone terribly wrong.

SumOlogy: It’s sadly not worth much.
